Subject: Your Health Affects Your Mood and Your Mood Affects Your Health
What was first, the poor diet or the feeling of depression?
It sounds like the chicken and the egg paradox, doesn't
it? Who was here first: the thinker or the thought?
Why, probably you the thinker, right?
Consider this, could it be you (the thinker) are
responsible for your own depression and cheerfulness (the
thought)?
Have you ever really asked yourself these questions before?
Asking yourself the right question can bring about a
positive change of mind. One thing is for sure: I am my
own best expert when it comes to depression and
cheerfulness. I have made a friend and advisor of both.
Perhaps you should, as well.
Unfortunately, a vast number of people feel trapped and
threatened by depression. But, the fact is they are only
trapped by their unwillingness, or fear, to see depression
as a natural swing of the emotive pendulum. In a real sense
of the word, they have become their own worst enemies by
creating an imaginary prison of thoughts.
Like the butterfly inside the cocoon, you are transforming
as you read this.
Transforming the way you look at the world and your
relationship to it is the first step. Like the ancient
Taoist saying goes, "A journey of ten-thousand miles,
begins with a single step."
We all eventually discover that neither happiness nor
sorrow is permanent. All your suffering is because of your
attempt to make those feelings permanent, which is what I
call being perfectly human, or perfectly imperfect. That is
the human condition, my friend.
Does it help you to know you are not alone? How do you feel
about that?
The temporary state of depression carries a certain sense
of indescribable loneliness. Not just the fact of being
alone but, a deep feeling of isolation, of being separated
from everyone else. Being alone is completely different
than feeling loneliness and isolation.
There is a "reason" you feel the way you feel. You can
balance your heart and mind, join feeling and reason
together, because they are two sides of the same coin.
The first thing to realize is that you are entirely
responsible for how you feel and the thoughts you have. Not
in the sense that it is your duty, or that you are
obligated, but rather because you actually genuinely care.
That sense of personal responsibility is an empowering
realization, not a burden.
You see, your self-image is a tool of perception and sadly
many people do not apply this tool with a sense of purpose.
The most vital step in the healing process, regardless of
what the problem, is to make a fundamental shift in
awareness.
This shift in awareness is a self-adjusting function of the
human mind.
You see, you are busy making decisions all through the day;
this is the human condition. The reason we all do this from
time to time is we are learning, discovering and
experiencing the importance of asking better questions, and
until we do ask better questions we will be riddled by
seemingly uncontrollable choices.
Multiple choices equal multiple confusion, so simplify. You
can go beyond the conflict of happiness and depression,
because you made them.
I can only point you to your own answer; I cannot go into
it for you. But here is a hint: it has to do with "what
is" and "what is not." Once you realize this, there
are no other real choices to make. While you are busy
living "what is," you won't have time for "what is
not." Oops, there now I went and got philosophical.
However, understand that the whole world is feeling
depressed right along with you. There is no reason to doubt
this because we share the same basic biology and are subject
to similar conditioning. And when you are happy the whole
world feels your happiness too.
This is not akin to childish foolishness; rather, it is a
"childlike wisdom."
True healing is feeling free from the past, so be here now.
The answer is to really ask yourself the "right
question" . . . and it just happens to be the one you
already have the answer to. You know what I mean.
Bottom line: you are not alone, ever. You are defined by
your relationships and them by you. The entire world is
connected to you, because to the world you are the rest of
it all. You are that important!
That may not make sense to you right away. But, it is
important that you ask yourself what this means to you. But
if you are just going to believe everything you read, then
stop reading altogether and start discovering whom you
really are.
The very act of feeling depressed must be explored. The
more you decide to be afraid of seeing it for what it is,
the more cheerfulness will seem to evade you.
It is a common human habit to desire a sense of permanence,
to want certain things to last forever. But, this pattern of
behavior belongs to the human condition, to your past, your
childishness. When you start going into this more you will
see the importance of asking better questions. Here are
three questions:
- Is it possible to live without this conditioning?
- Is a fresh new awareness really possible?
- Am I ready to listen to the answer?
Psychological, emotional release is necessary before you
can address the cause of your physical suffering. Yes, it
is possible for your diet and environment to affect your
emotional well-being, but truly only if you grant it
permission.
By analyzing what you are feeling you automatically shift
your psychological pendulum to the opposite pole of
perception. Never fully experiencing the moment you bounce
back and forth forever caught between two fears.
Because it is thought's nature to constantly compare and
measure, it stifles anything spontaneous or creative. You
can hone your mind tools and control what you choose to
perceive. It is called breaking bad habits.
If I stop to think about the fact that "I feel happy," I
suddenly cease to be happy because I introduced its
opposite and now am afraid it might not last and this
depresses me. Do you see how a misused mind can work
against you?
If you are truly happy, there is nothing to analyze, you
simply are happy. So let go of your old ways of thinking,
analyzing and comparing, and live your life completely,
deeply and fearlessly in each new moment, with a fresh
fire.
If you watch yourself you will notice your thoughts affect
everything this way.
Be your own authority, the author of the book of your life.
Even the analysts need to be analyzed, so why would you ask
someone else how to feel happy? Embrace true happiness,
peace and healing for yourself, first with your mind, then
for your body. When your body is strong and revitalized
from a "renewed" healthy lifestyle, you will be free of
your own negative conditioning.
Today I was going to tell you how dangerous anti-depression
drugs like Zoloft have become. But instead, I felt this
would be more important for us both if I wrote about "the
power of thought." I mean really . . . what good is
anyone's ability to choose if they don't believe their
decision has any power?
Truth is your renewed mind is primary to physical health.
People that have a healthy attitude typically eat healthier
and take better care of their body. Scientific studies have
recently confirmed that depression can even cause diabetes.
Yes, the mind is powerful in thought and deed.
The will to live well increases the possibility of any
patient's recovery and the opposite plays a role, as
well. People who give up the will to live deteriorate at an
accelerated pace.
So, perhaps knowing the power of your own thoughts will
guide you to making the right decision about your mental
and physical well being, once and for all.
