Criticism Prepares You for Playing a Bigger Game

Whether you like it or not, one thing that happens once you start multiplying your business is that you become a target for criticism. I'm not talking about criticism from your family or friends, because you may get that too, but I'm referring to criticism in your industry.

Every time that I have stepped out of my comfort zone, taken a risk and have done something much bigger in my business, inevitably there are going to be some haters--people who will criticize just to take pot shots.

Today I want to talk to you about how to deal with this type of criticism. First and foremost, you have to realize that the bigger you play, the more you will invite criticism. I've experienced this just recently in my own business.

You can give good value and you can give above and beyond and you can just be so loving and yummy, there will always be somebody who gets a greater sense of self-esteem by tearing other people down. Do you ever experience that?

It can be really shocking at first. Sometimes it could be a disgruntled client who just decides to rip into you.

There are a couple of ways that you can deal with that. The first, if you feel like it, go ahead and have a good cry. That's what I did recently. Just have a big ol' cry and let it out.

Then realize that it's usually not your issue; it's usually theirs. Usually it's the person who is criticizing who gets this greater sense of self-value when they tear other people down. So, know that is the case most of the time, and tell yourself, "That's not my problem. That's theirs. They're projecting something false onto me."

You could say that they're jealous or they resent you or they're angry at you because you've made it, You're playing a bigger game and they're not.

After a few days of thinking about it, you can look at the criticism and say, "Which part of this can I own?"

Even if their criticism is inflammatory, is there one percent of it that you can own and say, "If I'm going to be in integrity with how I do things, is a tiny bit of it true?" Usually there is a tiny bit of it that's true.

Here are some tips that Fabienne shared on dealing with criticism:

1.  Realize that the bigger you become, the more you will be prone to receiving criticism.  Don't be alarmed by this.

2.  Then, realize that it's usually not your problem, but instead, it's usually a problem with the person who is criticizing you.

3.  Still, try to be objective and see if there is any part of what they are saying that is actually true and that you should take ownership of.  If there is just one percent that they are saying that is true and that you can learn from, then at least at least you can take ownership of that small truth and become better as a result.

Men and women should both consider doing yoga exercises to help strengthen your nervous system, and make your body healthier.  Yoga exercises can help reduce stress and live a healthier life.  Give it a try and see the benefits for yourself.

Mind:

Fear can be one of the biggest things that holds us back from accomplishing our goals.  Have you ever found yourself saying "What if [this happens]?"  And when you complete the sentence, it is a negative outcome that you are afraid of.  All those negative "what if" statements are scaring you into thinking we are not capable of certain things.  Here's the good news: you can reverse this effect.  The next time you find yourself thinking a negative "what if", immediately turn it around and make it positive.  For example, say "What if this works and I finally get the freedom I've been looking for", or "What if this works and I am able to help so many more people".  This strategy will build your confidence and help you let go of whatever is holding you back.


Spirit:

Do you ever have a week that drags on and never seems to end?  Maybe your boss is nagging you, your kids may be getting on your nerves, or your "Honey To Do" list is getting longer. A great way to lift your spirits is to put something on your calendar that you can do in the next few days or week. For example, invite a friend to dinner to try out a new restaurant, go see a 3D movie with your family, or even take a spontaneous long weekend to visit a place you haven't been before. The act of putting this fun activity on the calendar will give you something to look forward to, and can make your week go more smoothly.
