A decade ago, I watched Alzheimer's whittle away the mind and livelihood of a loved one. By the end, she was a shadow of her former self, a shrunken shell who couldn't recognize her own daughter.

It's a terrifying disease, and I'm sure you're as desperate to avoid it as I am.

Scientists led by a French researcher suspected that low levels of vitamin D were linked to cognitive decline among older adults. So they wanted to see whether dietary intake of vitamin D might predict who would get Alzheimer's disease.

They studied 498 women who were 75 or older, dividing the women into three groups: no dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and other dementia.

What they found (and published in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Science) is pretty amazing.

The women who had the highest dietary intakes of vitamin D were a whopping 77 percent less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's in seven years, compared with the women who took in the lowest levels of vitamin D.

We already knew that one of the benefits of vitamin D is cognitive protection, but we haven't seen such promising numbers until this study. Now we know that vitamin D intake could be a key to keeping your mind sharp and free of Alzheimer's well into your golden years.

To harness the benefits of vitamin D, Dr. Wright recommends soaking up the sun and working with a physician skilled in natural medicine to find your body's optimal level of vitamin D. A general daily dose for adults is 4,000 IU, which can be achieved by spending 20 minutes in the sun with your face and arms exposed.

If you can't get enough from the sun, cod liver oil is a good source of vitamin D. It packs in 1,200 to 1,500 IU per tablespoon. Be sure to take extra vitamin E if you supplement with fish oils, as it will help keep them from oxidizing too rapidly in your body.

Beating bursitis

Q: My doctor is recommending cortisone shots for my bursitis. Is there anything natural I can try first?

Dr. Wright: Routine treatments for bursitis include everything from aspirin and other NSAIDs to potentially more dangerous COX-2 inhibitor drugs like now withdrawn Vioxx and Celebrex, and onward to injections of the "space alien" varieties of cortisone. But these are just temporary treatments that don't get at the root of the problem--not to mention the fact that they all come with a long list of potential side effects.

But over the past 33 years, I have recommended an entirely different treatment for bursitis sufferers--one that's completely natural, with no side effects.

And even though my patients have all had different complaints and varying degrees of pain, I gave them all the same advice for treatment.

Nearly 50 years ago, Dr. Irving S. Klemes discovered that the best treatment for bursitis pain is vitamin B12. Nothing has come close to it since then. When Dr. Klemes treated 40 individuals with acute subdeltoid bursitis with vitamin B12 shots, he found that they almost all experienced rapid pain relief--in some cases starting in just a few hours--and that complete relief was often achieved within a few days. All but three individuals were completely pain free within two to three weeks.

Dr. Klemes recommended that vitamin B12 (1cc, 1,000 micrograms) be given by injection every day for a week, then tapered to three times weekly, then to twice weekly, and then to once weekly until the pain was completely gone. Early on, I asked bursitis sufferers to follow these instructions exactly. Later, I discovered that taking 2 ccs of vitamin B12 every day until the pain went away, with no tapering, worked even better.

Hundreds of my patients have made complete recoveries within two weeks with no other treatment. In 33 years, I've seen vitamin B12 fail to relieve bursitis pain only once. In all other cases, even with the worst pain and swelling, vitamin B12 injections have always taken care of the problem.

But what happens if you DO have a stroke?

That's when an ancient practice can become a modern day "miracle." One that helped participants in a recent study significantly improve their balance after only 8 weeks.

A study published in the journal Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association reveals that patients who participated in a yoga-based rehabilitation workout program following a stroke had better improvement than those who did the usual post-stroke rehab.

They also showed more significant improvement toward independence and had less of a fear of falling than their run-of-the-mill rehab counterparts.

This follows an earlier study that showed that yoga improved functional strength, flexibility, and endurance in stroke patients.

In the more recent study, participants went to yoga classes twice per week and did standing, seated, and floor postures that became more challenging week after week. The average age of the patients was 63 years.

The study's findings are really impressive. In fact, according to the researchers they defy what's in the literature for older adults. That means yoga appears to be outdoing any other kind of rehab, to the point that it's doing things scientists and doctors thought rehab COULDN'T do.

If you had a stroke several years ago and are worried you missed the boat on the benefits of yoga, take heart. The average time since the stroke for these trial participants was four years.

And these findings could be especially important to women. In another study, Swedish researchers recently found that women have a poorer quality of life after a stroke than men do. The participants in the yoga program showed significant improvements in quality of life factors. That means yoga could really offer something major to women.

Back off on the B?

Q: Isn't taking too much B12 dangerous? I'm confused, because I've read several articles from you recommending large doses of the vitamin.

Dr. Wright: I've been working with vitamin B12 therapy since 1973, and I can tell you that the only way you could kill yourself with this nutrient would be to fill your bathtub with it and drown.

Over two decades ago, there was some concern that metabolic breakdown of very large quantities of a certain form of B12 (called cyanocobalamin) might set excess quantities of cyanide (from the "cyano" part of "cyanocobalamin") loose into the body. This theory has never been proven, but you can avoid even the very remote possibility of such a reaction by using different forms of vitamin B12: hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin.

Both are just as effective -- if not more so -- than cyanocobalamin.
